I enjoy creating and capturing the magical union of image and sound for all types of media. I have worked and or lived in London, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Prague, Vienna, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires. It was in London just after the Berlin wall fell that my friends and I formed the post-rock band The God Machine. We signed a major record deal with Polydor, released two full length records, a couple of EPs and singles. We toured extensively throughout Europe and North America and supported some of the coolest recording artists of the time such as; Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Fall, The Cramps, Radiohead and many more.
My musical life in England culminated in a week long recording session with a band I admired since I was a teenager, The Cure. I got to work alongside Robert Smith and Steve Lyon in a fairy tale like castle in the West Country of England. That musical momentum and dreamlike life propelled me into film making, video production and photography.
It was in London that I dove deeper into the visual crafts experimenting with both film and video. I created my own short films and music videos on Super 8, 16mm, 35mm film and digital. It wasn’t long before i found myself shooting and offline editing for clients like BMW, Sony and The Telegraph and assistant directing commercials, music videos, corporate videos and films. After a decade in Europe, I spent a summer in NYC assistant directing and production managing a series of music videos. I decided it was time to return to the USA and I landed at my point of departure, San Diego, California. The city I grew up in.
I launched my first production company and produced commercials and brand videos for urban development companies like Barrat and Hard Rock Hotel. Just across the border in Mexico, I met a collective of documentary makers and made 3 documentaries for their television show. Our documentary A Film 4 Peace, an anti-war expose, won several festival awards and I was invited to attend, present and speak at a week long seminar at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico city.
San Diego “America’s Finest City”, never felt truly enough for my creative explorations, so i found myself back in New York City for the third time in my life. It was in NYC that I helped create the award winning Sundance Channel web series, The Captive. I scouted locations, worked on casting, was the Director of Photography and edited the first assembly of the series. I set up my own production and post production shop in the East Village, Manhattan and began a long thrilling partnership with the MAC Cosmetics creative team.
I was selected to direct MAC’s fall collection film which included collaborations with artist Marilyn Minter, illustrator Maira Kalman and artist Richard Phillips. This project lead to a collaboration with Marilyn Minter, a truly inspiring New York Artist. I shot and edited Marilyn’s art film Green Pink Caviar. It showed on Times Square’s largest video screen, was used as background for Madonna’s European tour and showed at MOMA in NYC for a year.
If you were to ask me, out of all of this, what my favorite project is; I would say it’s my 13yr old daughter Hannah. She is the best.
